What is content moderation ?

Methods of content moderation 

Pre-moderation

With this method, comments or posts are thoroughly vetted before being allowed to be posted. Human moderators are assigned for this task. In the business world, this method is used to prevent negative impact on consumers and the business itself. It is also a way of protecting their brand. Once the content does not meet community guidelines, it is not approved. Pre-moderation is very popular for online child communities to detect bullying.

Post-moderation 

This method involves the removal of a post which goes contrary to the guidelines of a particular online community. The use of certain tools assists moderators to duplicate and assess details of a posted content. Moderators are able to quickly decide whether to delete or maintain a content. The number of moderators is very important, especially when it is a large audience in a live interaction.

Reactive moderation 

It relies on members of an online community flagging up content that breaches that community's guidelines, or which members of the community find unacceptable. Usually, buttons are available to be clicked. This alerts the administration.

Supervisor moderation to ascertain whether flagged content is really inappropriate for the community. Once confirmed, the particular post is removed manually. 

Commercial content moderation

It is usually adopted by firms and organisations to guard against damage to their brand and reputation. The means used include relying on another user flagging inappropriate content within the confines of the law, community guidelines or general societal norms. Moderators secure the sites or platforms from harmful content such as pornography or violence. 

Distributed moderation

It involves user moderation and spontaneous moderation. With user moderation, each,each user is allowed to moderate another's contents up or down by a point. The points are aggregated within a particular range. A limited threshold is arrived at from the score, and it is shows whether the content lies at or is above the threshold. With spontaneous moderation, users randomly moderate one another's content. Allowing randomly selected content to be rated increases fairness. This type of moderation is rarely used because it relies solely on the online community. 

Automated moderation

It requires no human effort and prevents unacceptable contents from showing in an online community. Such tools as filters, and Natural Language Processing which prohibits certain words and expressions are used. They are identified, flagged, modified or deleted completely. Another tool also deletes links from IP addresses which have been prohibited.  

Loopholes of content moderation 

Especially in the use of Natural Language Processing, content moderation does not give room for  “thinking outside the box.” Content moderation does not take into consideration the circumstances, intent and emotions behind a post. For example, one jokingly posting “I will knock you out” will be flagged in automated moderation as violent speech. 

Content moderation has an emotional effect on moderators. Moderators are daily faced with explicit and traumatising data. It has a psychological effect on them and has the tendency to shoot arrows of mental burnout.

Usually, community regulatory guidelines are inaccurate. Content moderation does not take into account the technical or cultural context under which a content is created. 

The large volumes of data that come in on a daily basis poses a significant toll, especially for human moderators who have to manually check each content to decide what to do with them. It is also difficult, even with the aid of artificial intelligence, to moderate content within expected time.

Content types which can be moderated

Text: Context-based text filter and classification notices and removes harmful content before users see it. Prohibited words and sensitive content, such as threats and hate speech, is automatically noticed and deleted.

Image: Within this context, images that depict nudity, violence, weapons, drugs, or gore are automatically detected and deleted. 

Video: Content moderation automatically detects video frames which contain violence, gory images, drugs, weapons, or nudity.
